Immersive Audio Workshop

@IKLECTIK

In this introductory full-day workshop you will learn the theory and practice of working with immersive audio technology. The workshop will take place at IKLECTIK on the AMOENUS 3D sound system (a semispherical array of 17 speakers).

Following a seminar on the aesthetics and applications of spatial sound in the arts, on Ambisonics recording and playback systems and binaural audio alongside live demonstrations, the workshop will focus on Envelop for Live, a collection of free, open-source immersive audio production tools that work with Ableton Live 10/11 Suite.

Participants will then work on a short 3D sound composition of their own in binaural audio before a feedback session, where all pieces will be listened to on the AMOENUS sound system.

Amoenus is a non-profit art organisation that facilitates, educates, curates, and promotes immersive art centred around 3D sound.

We support the development of sound-driven artforms that blur the boundaries between artists and audiences.

Amoenus wishes to introduce a change in the way in which art is consumed today: departing from the traditional one-sided mode of artistic consumption, it welcomes its audience in the middle of creative expression.

We work with charity and non-profit organisations to set up and manage our pop-up performance spaces, prioritising creative hubs and recycled buildings & infrastructures.

The organisation serves as a nexus between funding bodies and independent makers & creatives, distributing the totality of its income to those involved in the creative process.

AMOENUS x IKLECTIK present: Free Improvisation in 3D Sound

Thursday 12 May 2022 | 7pm to 10pm

Tickets: £13 on the door

John Butcher, Ute Kanngiesser and Sharon Gal, three pillars of the London free improvisation scene, will dive deep into the sonic intricacies of their instruments in collaboration with spatial sound artist Christian Duka. Saxophone, cello and voice will be the raw material to build living sonic sculptures - rotating, expanding and contracting across a 3D sound field surrounding the audience.

John Butcher

Butcher is well known as a saxophonist who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of time and place. His music ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback and extreme acoustics. His “Resonan Spaces” CD is a collection of site-specific performances recorded during a tour of unusual locations in Scotland and the Orkney Islands.

Since the early 80s he has collaborated with hundreds of artists  including Derek Bailey, Eddie Prévost, Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Steve Beresford, Okkyung Lee, John Russell, Christian Marclay and Matthew Shipp. Additionally he values occasional encounters - from the WDR Sinfonieorchester and EX Orkest to duos with Akio Suzuki Keiji Haino, David Toop, Sophie Agnel, Fred Frith and Joe McPhee Recent compositions include “Penny Wands” for Futurist Intonarumori, three HCMF commissions, “Good Liquor…” for the London Sinfonietta and “Tarab Cuts” (shortlisted for a British Composer’s Award)

Ute Kanngiesser

Ute Kanngiesser has played cello since early childhood, and for more than a decade, has only played unscripted, improvised music - solo and in collaboration with other musicians and composers in London and internationally. An important part of her work has developed in relationship to other art forms such as writing, dance, film, and site specific performance. More recently, she has begun to experiment with open form compositions, writing semi-graphic scores as a way of recording music, that can be retrieved later on and in new ways.

Recent collaborations have been with Evie Ward, Daniel Blumberg, Billy Steiger, Tom Wheatley, Crystabel Riley, Seymour Wright, Paul Abbott, Keira Greene, John Butcher, Eddie Prévost and Jennifer Allum.

Sharon Gal

Sharon Gal is an interdisciplinary artist, performer, vocalist and composer, specialising in free improvisation and participatory, collaborative large group compositions. She works with voice, extended techniques, electronics, various instruments, field recordings, found audio, video and collage; exploring presence, listening, embodiment, and the relationship between people, sound and space.

Sharon performs solo and in collaborations with: David Toop, Steve Beresford, Phil Minton, Charles Hayward, John Butcher, Andie Brown, Yoni Silver, Sue Lynch, Blanca Regina, Anat Ben David and Lina Lapelyte. Past performances include The V&A, Science Museum, ICA, The Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Modern & Tate Britain, MACBA, and Colour Out of Space, Borealis,  Supernormal,  Supersonic and TUSK festivals.

Christian Duka

Christian is a sound artist/designer, musician, immersive audio specialist and higher education lecturer. Following a month-long residency at MONOM 4D Sound in Berlin, he curated UR: Human Presence, an interdisciplinary immersive piece involving 3D sound, physical performance and passive audience participation utilising a 54 speakers system. He has since been active as an immersive art curator and 3D sound artist/designer.

In 2019 he founded AMOENUS, an immersive art organisation that supports the development of immersive audio in the arts. Using a custom 13.4 sound system (currently installed at IKLECTIK in London), AMOENUS organises R&Ds, curates events and delivers workshops in spatial audio.
